Mia’s grandmother has been dead for years. So when Mia finds a gift from her — a beautiful pendant and a distressing note — that’s odd enough. Soon after, Mia’s dreams become haunted by a long-forgotten friend in desperate need of help.

Mia’s previously ordinary world becomes a fascinating and dangerous place, full of powerful magic and ruthless people. And everyone seems to either want something from her, or to want to do something to her.

But Mia is not helpless. As she discovers the strange parallel world, she learns she has unique abilities and power of her own. The question is, will she learn to control these powers — and find out who she can trust — in time?

I'm not skilled at reviewing books, but I want to say something about this one.

Yes, it's a story aimed at teens and young adults, but Susan Nelson weaves a compelling story of an alternate reality that is compelling. The phrase "suspension of disbelief" comes to mind as it applies to this and many books in the fantasy genre. Here's the deal: Nelson makes the characters compelling enough that it is not difficult to let go of sensibility, to simply enjoy the world she has created. I really enjoyed going into her world.

Why did I even pick this book up? After all, I'm 55 and far removed from the coming-of-age phase of life. So why? Well, that's another important element of this story. Nelson wrote this book while in the battle for her life. She was raising four children, including twin girls born shortly before she first knew she had breast cancer. She had this story to tell, had an audience in mind, and she worked tirelessly to complete the story all the while her strength and vitality was being stolen from her by cancer.

The battle was glorious and told beautifully by her husband on his blog. Susan nearly finished writing her book, but it stops at a perfect point, it stops at a point that allows the reader to conclude where things go for the characters according to how their own hearts see the world. I loved the fact that I got to decide what that last chapter would be.

I love the fact that Nelson's husband published this book and told us the back story of it's writing. I love feeling like I'm part of the story. That's what this story on two levels does. It draws you in.

This is a good story, interesting and well-told. Susan Nelson's own story, as related by her husband, makes it very poignant as a reading experience. Best wishes to her family and thanks, as a reader and fan, for sharing her book with us.
As a follower of fatcyclist.com I purchased this book for two reasons 1) I wanted to support Fatty in a small way for all he does in his efforts to help those fighting cancer (which took my father in September after a long battle, and 2) I enjoy teen novels. I find teen novels more transporting ( which is what I look for in a good book) than adult novels.

I thoroughly enjoyed Susan's novel. The rise and fall in plot was exciting and the relationships between the characters was genuine and well thought out. Once I began reading the book I could not put it down. I needed to see where Mia would go, both with her own development as a character, and in the development of her relationships with those around her.
I so enjoyed this book and am sorry that a wonderful talent is gone too soon. I am really sorry for your loss and hope you can find peace with the story she created as a legacy.
The book is fantastic and satisfying on its own, but it would have been wonderful if Susan had lived to give us the next installment. She created a very interesting world that makes you want to explore it more. The main character is special without being annoying - which is sometimes a big problem in this genre. This is definitely a book that teens would enjoy, but there's a lot here for adults, too. Definitely recommend.
I was hesitant to even begin a book that wasn't finished, and know I grieve at the loss of such an amazing writer and story teller! Nelson's character and plot development were purposeful and effective. I couldn't put this book down. The characters became alive to me. I can't help but wish Nelson's spirit is able to find a way to complete what her human form could not. Maybe she's actually with the Terraran's - enjoying amazing food - building strength!
Like other reviewers, I just finished this book. I couldn't put it down. As others have said, the characters are believable, the plot fun and just enough of an escape, the readers temporarily forgets Susan was enduring chemo while she was writing this. I, too, wish she'd been able to finish and write the sequel, too. I could easily see this on the big screen, and I'd be first in line to watch it.The Forgotten Gift An Interrupted Novel
I very much enjoyed this book! I am an adult, and found the author's writing very enjoyable to read and very engaging. the story line is interesting, the characters well developed, and the writing style is like you are right there in the story with the characters. I find myself sad that there will not be the sequel the author already had envisioned, and so SO glad that the author's husband took it upon himself to get this book published. The author's children will have this legacy and memory of their mother's final gift to them; my best wishes to the family. Meanwhile, this book is very much worth it, on it's own merit.
